What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is the medical term for ear surgery and is commonly performed on children (and adults) who have large or protruding ears. This minor procedure is done to “pin back” the ears so they no longer protrude. It can also be done for those whose ears are misshapen or not positioned evenly so that they can look more symmetrical. Unfortunately, children can be teased over their ears and become very self-conscious about it. Since a child’s ears grow to near adult size by the age of 5 or 6, Dr. Demetri believes it is safe to perform ear surgery at this age.

Otoplasty is performed so the ears will be flush with the head. This gives a more normal appearance to the face. It also has the following benefits:

Who is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?
When the ears protrude significantly from the head rather than lie flush against it, they look different and unnatural. This may lead to a lot of embarrassment and teasing. In general, children and adults with large, protruding ears are good candidates for the surgery.
How is the Surgery Done?
Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure done under local anesthesia with sedation. During the procedure, Dr. Demetri meticulously removes any excess cartilage and then the ears are repositioned to lay more against the head. It usually only takes him about 2 hours to do this procedure.
Following the surgery, a dressing is placed on the ears along with a bandage wrapped around the head. This is done to protect the ears during the initial healing. In children, Dr. Demetri will use absorbable sutures that dissolve over time. Most people decide to take a week off from school or work. This surgery is not painful and is well tolerated.
