There is nothing you can do to stop your face from aging. You can try to slow down the process, but the natural effects of aging and other environmental factors like sun exposure take a toll every day. Thankfully, surgical procedures like a facelift offer a way to turn back the clock and prevent loose skin and wrinkles from making you look older than you feel.

What Can a Facelift Procedure Do for Me?

The facelift procedure was designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the face and neck by getting rid of excess loose skin, tightening stretched-out and weakened facial muscles, and lifting the remaining tissues to give the skin a smooth and youthful appearance.

Finding the Right Plastic Surgeon for Your Facelift

Facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Demetri Arnaoutakis has performed numerous facial-rejuvenation procedures throughout his career and strives to perform the best facelift surgery in Tampa. He is capable of providing you with the results you are looking for.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

In general, individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their face and neck due to the effects of aging are excellent candidates for a facelift. Some of the common aesthetic issues that a facelift can address include:

  • Sagging cheeks
  • Lower-eyelid creases
  • The nasolabial folds and other wrinkles
  • Jowls
  • Loose skin underneath the chin
  • Pockets of excess fat

Good candidates for a facelift should be in good overall health and should have realistic expectations regarding the kind of results that are possible through this surgery. During your initial consultation, Dr. Demetri will go over your medical history, examine your current condition, and ask about your reasons for pursuing surgery. You will be able to ask any questions you may have.

How to Prepare for a Facelift

During your consultation, Dr. Demetri will give you instructions on how to prepare for a facelift. Follow these carefully to ensure that you will get the best results from the procedure.

Some of these preparations include quitting smoking for 4 to 6 weeks before your facelift appointment. Avoiding alcoholic beverages for at least 48 hours is also advised to prevent any complications with healing.

You may be asked to take a break from a few medications that are anti-inflammatory and blood thinning. You may also need to avoid certain herbal supplements. These will help prevent excessive swelling and bruising after a facelift. Arnica will help reduce swelling and bruising during recovery.

Arrange for time off work for 5 to 7 days, and arrange for transportation home from a friend or family member. Secure enough pillows in your resting area, and have your necessities nearby.

On the day of your procedure, wash your hair with mild shampoo. This will help protect your skin from contamination. Wear button-up tops during your facelift journey to help you change clothes easily and maintain proper hygiene.

How is a Facelift Performed?

A facelift is performed under twilight anesthesia. There are different approaches and techniques that can be used during the procedure; the techniques used for yours will be decided during your initial consultation based on the results you are looking to achieve.

The incisions for the procedure are typically made behind the ears and along the hairline to ensure that any post-surgical marks are well hidden. Once the incisions are made, the skin can be lifted and excess skin can be trimmed. Dr. Demetri can then adjust weakened facial muscles. To complete the procedure, the remaining skin is lifted and the incisions are tightly sutured closed.

What to Expect After Your Facelift

A degree of swelling, bruising, and discomfort will occur following your facelift. These issues should subside after a day or two. Ice packs can also help to reduce swelling and discomfort, and pain-control medication can be prescribed.

After around seven days, the sutures will be removed. Most patients are able to resume normal activities on the same day as their procedure. Strenuous activities will need to be avoided for four to six weeks. Most patients wait about a week before returning to work.

How Long Do Facelifts Last?

The results of a facelift should last for about 10 years. You can consult with Dr. Demetri regarding secondary facelift procedures and other ways to preserve your results.
